For 2012, Honda’s luxury touring Gold Wing GL1800 series has returned from a one-year hiatus with a modest makeover. There were no Gold Wings made for model year 2011, as Honda moved its production from Marysville, Ohio to Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan.

Styling revisions for 2012 include the fairings, which improve wind protection to the rider’s legs and torso, and the seating is also upgraded for greater comfort. Improved fork bushings and damping changes provide a slightly cushier ride with better compliance. Out back, the saddlebags have been enlarged and their tail lights changed.

H

onda’s silky smooth and reliable 1,832cc horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, transmission with electric reverse and shaft drive are all unchanged. This engine has won accolades and it really doesn’t need to be changed–unless a hybrid drive were to come along, as rumors have been hinting. We were surprised that the five-speed manual transmission is still the only choice, as Honda offers six-speeds, semi-automatics and a fully automatic transmission on other models.

Gold Wing’s traveling credentials include the latest generation of electronic amenities, including a brighter screen and the latest iteration of Honda’s excellent Satellite Linked Navigation System. It offers user-friendly programmability that allows you to sha

re favorite ride routes with friends, and can be accessed online. It combines real-time traffic alerts with turn-by-turn talking GPS navigation, which allows music to be played simultaneously. The Gold Wing also now incorporates AM-FM and XM satellite radio, CB two-way communication and a built-in MP3/iPod interface via a new SRS CS Auto technology surround-sound system. Riders can listen through speakers in each corner that can even be heard at highway speeds, or direct the sound to helmet-mounted headsets.
Cruise control is standard and holds the speed spot on. Also standard are five-position hand warming grips, plus seat and passenger backrest heaters. As part of the restyling the saddlebags get an additional seven liters of storage volume. Combined with the standard trunk and fairing pockets, they have more than 150 liters of capacity. There’s even a fob-mounted remote control that locks and unlocks the bags and trunk. In fact there are so many switches and buttons, you almost need to take a training course.
